Ich heiße Tillmann Damrau, bin bildender Künstler und derzeit Professor für Malerei, Digital & Expanded Painting am Seminar für Kunst und Kunstwissenschaft der TU Dortmund. Hier sammle ich allerlei Absichten, Ansichten und Einsichten zur Kunst.
Im Blog finden sich jede Menge lose Enden und bloße Anfänge, nur Beabsichtigtes und auch Unüberlegtes vielleicht, viel Unverbundenes und Bruchstückhaftes auf jeden Fall.
Kern meiner künstlerischen Arbeit ist die Erfahrung der Beschränktheit, der Kontingenz unseres Wissens und unserer Interpretation von „Welt“. Heute weniger denn je reichte die Anstrengung eines Einzelnen aus, das Wissen der Zeit zu fassen. Paradox ist, dass im Alltag kaum jemand diese Begrenztheit als grundsätzlichen Mangel empfindet.
Der einzelne Mensch versteht sich gewöhnlich als Ganzes, nicht als Bruchstück und die Menschen sind keineswegs so verzagt, gebrochen und desorientiert wie es bisweilen für unsere kuriose Moderne nach der Moderne vorhergesagt wurde. Mag sein, ihre Persönlichkeit ist fragmentiert, inkohärent und inkonsistent, sie sehen darin Offenheit, Vielfalt und Möglichkeit. Gerne schließe ich mich Odo Marquard an: „Wir Menschen sind stets mehr unsere Zufälle als unsere Wahl.“
Mehr denn je empfinde ich mich als jemanden, der vielleicht nicht jeden Morgen mit mehr Willenskraft aufsteht, als er am Abend zuvor zu Bett gebracht hat, wie das der „Künstler“ Vautrin vom jungen Rastignac in Balzacs “Père Goriot” fordert, der dafür aber staunend und neugierig mit einer Art elaborierter Naivität durchs Lebens geht.
Jeder beansprucht ein ganzes Leben, eines, das seinen diversen Selbstbildern genügt und es ermöglicht diese im Alltag auch zu entwickeln oder – bei Bedarf – auch zu verwerfen. Gerade diese Offenheit, Varietät, Agilität und Plastizität des Ich vermittelt subjektiv Authentizität und durchaus auch ein Menschenbild. Im Bezug auf dieses Menschenbild, sei es auch noch so vorläufig, fließend oder fragil, verstehen wir uns immer noch als etwas Vollständiges, Ganzes, Unteilbares, als Individuum eben.

The blog contains lots of loose ends and mere beginnings, only intentional and perhaps also ill-considered, in any case, a lot of unconnected and fragmentary things.
The core of my artistic work is the experience of limitation, the contingency of our knowledge, and our interpretation of the world. Today, less than ever before, the efforts of a single individual are sufficient to grasp the knowledge of the time. Paradoxically, hardly anyone in everyday life perceives this limitation as a fundamental deficiency.
Individuals usually see themselves as a whole, not as fragments, and people are by no means as despondent, broken, and disoriented as was sometimes predicted for our curious modernity after modernity. It may be that their personalities are fragmented, incoherent, and inconsistent, but they see this as openness, diversity, and possibility. I am happy to agree with Odo Marquard: „We humans are always more our coincidences than our choices.“
More than ever, I see myself as someone who may not wake up every morning with more willpower than he went to bed with the night before, as the „artist“ Vautrin demands of the young Rastignac in Balzac’s „Père Goriot,“ but who goes through life with a kind of elaborate naivety, full of wonder and curiosity.
Everyone claims a whole life, one that satisfies their various self-images and enables them to develop these in everyday life or, if necessary, to discard them. It is precisely this openness, variety, agility, and plasticity of the self that subjectively conveys authenticity and, indeed, a view of humanity. In relation to this image of humanity, however provisional, fluid, or fragile it may be, we still see ourselves as something complete, whole, indivisible, as individuals.
